Ammonia refrigeration plant for Atria’s Nurmo poultry processing plant
Atria Suomi Oy – Nurmon siipikarjatehdas

Atria’s new poultry processing plant is a demanding project within the food industry. A large proportion of the premises are refrigerated areas that are cleaned daily. Such a modern and technically complex facility poses major challenges for the design process: the schedule must be adhered to and the design work must progress smoothly in collaboration with the rest of the design organisation. Hepacon was responsible for the design of the refrigeration, M&E, electrical and building automation systems, as well as the energy design.

Hepacon and Atria have been working together for over 30 years, and technology has advanced considerably during that time. At the heart of the entire plant is the refrigeration system, which uses ammonia as a refrigerant. Ammonia is a responsible refrigerant with zero GWP and ODP values, and it is also the most energy-efficient option for large-scale industrial applications.

The plant’s energy consumption and energy recovery were carefully considered right from the design stage. The best solutions and configurations were identified through energy simulations carried out in collaboration with Atria. Thanks are also due to the team at Atria, whose expertise and experience are always on hand when we work together to find solutions.
